We've heard it over and over again from reliable sources such as the American Cancer Society, the American Heart Association, and the American Dietetic Association: Evidence indicates that a diet high in fruits and vegetables may help prevent cancer, heart disease, premature aging and the list goes on. But are we listening? I'd like to say the same thing one more time, but in a somewhat more radical way: a diet lacking in phytochemicals contributes to premature death. And this is true regardless of whether a person was conceived with perfectly fit genes or genetic defects, or programmed as a fetus to be more or less susceptible to disease. I never endorse anyone or anything. Opinions expressed in what I send out, may not be shared by me. Everything is for informational purposes only.

People who "advertise" through this newsletter have never been checked out by me. This includes professionals and even people who are interested in babysitting, etc.

Please take the time to thoroughly check out anyone and everyone that will be working with or caring for your child. We are all sadly aware, through news stories and word of mouth, of people who pray upon special needs children because of their extra vulnerability.

Thank you,
Valerie Dodd-Saraf

  • AIT in San Diego -- July 18 to 27

  • Dear Valerie,
Please share with your readers the following announcement, thank you.

Berard Auditory Integration Training will be conducted July 18 through 27, 2008 in San Diego in the OT, Etc/Excel Speech/PT in motion center in Kearny Mesa.

We are aware of how difficult it is for families to undertake all of the expenses of therapies for their son/daughter. AIT for You has been providing scholarships to families throughout the US over the past 10 years.

We are excited to announce that AIT for You is offering 2 partial scholarships of $300 to $400 each to families who qualify (your annual household income must meet certain guidelines). In order to save an additional $100, early registration is recommended (before June 6th, the fee for AIT is $1500, thereafter, $1600).

To receive an application for the July 2008 Berard AIT session and to apply for one of the two scholarships, please contact us at terries@execpc.com

Juice Plus+ is the simple, convenient, and inexpensive way to add more nutrition from fruits and vegetables to your diet, every day.

Tony and I have been taking Juice Plus+ daily for almost 5 years and we feel fabulous, and are more healthy. I have Fibromyalgia Syndrome (an inflammation of the nervous system that causes painful muscle spasms and chronic fatigue), and Juice Plus+ reduced my pain level by 90% and doubled my energy level. (Results may vary.)

Juice Plus+ is whole food nutrition and will not interfere with any biomedical treatment that you may be doing with your child, but will actually enhance it.

If you would like more information about Juice Plus+, please email me.

  • Scalp acupuncture effect on language development in children with autism: a pilot study.
  • BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Autism is a neurodevelopmental disorder that manifests in delays in social interaction, language used in social communication, and symbolic or imaginative play, with an onset prior to age 3 years. Language therapy (LT) for children with autism is the main form of rehabilitation, because it emphasizes its major presenting symptom (i.e., language impairment). Scalp acupuncture (scalp AP) is a modality based on the physiologic function of different brain areas, where different scalp zones are stimulated with needles so as to stimulate the reflexively related nervous tissue.

  • CORRECT LINK: Research Tool Can Detect Autism At 9 Months of Age
  • The ability to detect autism in children as young as nine months of age is on the horizon, according to researchers at McMaster University.

The Early Autism Study, led by Mel Rutherford, associate professor of psychology in the Faculty of Science, has been using eye tracker technology that measures eye direction while the babies look at faces, eyes, and bouncing balls on a computer screen.

  • Understanding autism vital for law enforcement
  • In Dennis Debbaudt's life, autism met law enforcement about 20 years ago.

Debbaudt was in the mall when his autistic young son had a meltdown in a toy store.

He picked up his screaming child and took him to the car, where they were stopped by an officer who received a report of a possible child abduction.

"That was the day I put on my first training for law enforcement," said Debbaudt, who spoke to a group of about 50 at Roncalli High School Monday evening.

  • Therapeutic Vest Will Help Children With Autism, ADHD, Anxiety
  • Children with autism and ADHD may soon get anxiety relief from a novel "deep-pressure" vest. The vest, which can also be used for adults with mental illness, delivers a "portable hug" called deep pressure touch stimulation (DPTS). "People with developmental disorders and mental illness are often overwhelmed in everyday environments such as school and the workplace, and solutions available to families and mental health professionals are limited," says the doctoral student of mechanical engineering who developed the product. He said, "This is an alternative therapy that can safely and discreetly provide the treatment they need to function in mainstream society."
