I never endorse anyone or anything. Opinions expressed in what I send out, may not be shared by me. Everything is for informational purposes only.
People who "advertise" through this newsletter have never been checked out by me. This includes professionals and even people who are interested in babysitting, etc.
Please take the time to throughly check out anyone and everyone that will be working with or caring for your child. We are all sadly aware, through news stories and word of mouth, of people who pray upon special needs children because of their extra vulnerability.

Counseling needed for HFA young adult
|
|
My wife and I are Iooking for a good counselor and a good psychologist specializing in autism and young adults. We are also looking for socialization and group activities for our 22 year old son Larry Jr. who is currently living in a group home in El Cajon and working in down town half days. CARES is also making inquiries to see if their groups are consistent with his level and needs. Misc information: He is a very good singer and memorized many songs including many from the Disney song book. He is bilingual and an eagle scout. He seems so isolated. He is a client of the Regional Center and we are continuing to request counseling services from them. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Many of our subscribers have found us through your list. What a wonderful surprise and I thank you for that.
We recently began a new section on our website called "Life on the Spectrum". It has been getting a lot of attention and we would be honored if you would mention it in your newsletter. It's inspiring and uplifting for everyone who is touched by the special person in their life with autism.
Yahoo News ran some press about it
http://fe46.news.sp1.yahoo.com/s/prweb/20080401/bs _prweb/prweb816434
And even better, here is the link to the full article

You run a wonderful service and are very grateful to have been part of it. It would be wonderful if you considered this new piece where we recognize notable men and women on the autism spectrum - just in time for autism awareness month too.
Warm regards,
Jene Aviram

Autism symptoms less severe after treatment, says U of L research team
|
|
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - People with autism experienced less severe symptoms after researchers pulsed a low frequency magnetic field around their brains, a University of Louisville research team announced today.
The treatment, transcranial magnetic stimulation, is still in early testing stages, but has potential to become an effective treatment for the major symptoms of autism, said neuroscientist Manuel Casanova.
Members of the UofL research team placed a coil on the scalps of 10 people with autism to create a low frequency magnetic field, which they then pulsed by reversing the field's polarity. After receiving a 20 minute treatment twice a week for five weeks, patients showed fewer symptoms of hyperactivity, sensory overload and repetitive behaviors, said psychologist Lonnie Sears, a project collaborator.

Study supports theory that rise in autism is related to changes in diagnosis
|
|
Research funded by the Wellcome Trust suggests that many children diagnosed with severe language disorders in the 1980s and 1990s would today be diagnosed as having autism. The research supports the theory that the rise in the number of cases of autism may be related to changes in how it is diagnosed.
Professor Dorothy Bishop, a Wellcome Trust Principal Research Fellow at the University of Oxford, led a study which revisited 38 adults, aged between 15-31, who had been diagnosed with having developmental language disorders as children rather than being autistic. Professor Bishop and colleagues looked at whether they now met current diagnostic criteria for autistic spectrum disorders, either through reports of their childhood behaviour or on the basis of their current behaviour. The results are published this month in the journal Developmental Medicine & Child Neurology(1).
Developmental language disorders, which include specific language impairment, are diagnosed when a child has unusual difficulty in his or her grasp of the spoken language, despite normal development in other areas. This may range from a child who has very limited ability to produce or understand spoken sentences, to one who does speak in long and complex utterances, but nevertheless has problem communicating effectively because of problems in conveying a point or grasping what others mean.
Autistic spectrum disorders, which include autism and Asperger syndrome, are developmental disorders affecting how a person communicates with and relates to other people and how they make sense of the world around them.
