"Anybody here ever have a dog?" Raymond Parker, an actor, stand-up comic, writer and acting teacher, calls out to his class. The hands of roughly 20 of the 30 students fly up. "Did you ever wonder what your dog was thinking?" he asks.

    Let's face it. Who hasn't?

  • Medical Alert ID bands
  • Hi everyone. As summer approaches, some of us are making plans for camps that will require we entrust our loved ones to others. Our child's allergy issues could raise serious concerns. So, forwarding some information on med alert bracelets that may be of interest. Started by a mom whose 10 year old daughter was diagnosed with Type I diabetes.

  • Challenge Air back in San Diego in September
  • Hi everyone. Challenger Air is back to offer the opportunity to children with special needs and their families to fly an airplane this September 6 (yes, it is a way off but it takes a lot of planning!).

Details: 2008 San Diego, CA "Fly Day" at Brown Field on Saturday, September 6, 2008. You are welcome to register online for the event at www.challengeair.org. Up to 135 registrants allowed.

We participated in this and though I was kissing the ground when I landed, it was an absolutely amazing experience to see my little man Connor (aged 9) flying a plane. Brown airfield was filled with fun activities that included getting to go in a firetruck, bouncey, face painting, dancing, hot dogs, meeting with retired Marine pilots, seeing great families and kids, etc. The hangar is filled with activities including a "training center" where children and parents are given preliminaries in flying. There are several planes the kids can check out and take pictures in as well. There can be a wait despite your assigned flight time so just be ready to go with the flow!

The way it works is your child sits up front with the pilot. The nervous-about-to-have-a-heart-attack parent sits in the back (I was able to talk my wonderful mom into joining me!). Once the plane is up in the air over the Otay Mesa lakes (I believe) the pilot literally turns the plane over to the child - ready to take over of course if necessary. Connor took great joy pulling back to take us straight up and sideways ... Here are some photos to hopefully entice you to do this!

Pilots who fly with you and your child all donate their time, gas and planes to make this happen. Our pilot had flown in all the way from Texas. Quite an amazing group.

  • I am writing in the hopes that by sharing our family's experience - that of a military family with a young child diagnosed with autism - I might shed some light on the unique difficulties faced by servicemembers and their families who find themselves literally fighting on two fronts. One spouse is engaged in multiple deployments to support our country's efforts in Iraq, and the other is at home fighting the daily battle to acquire and maintain minimal therapy and services for a child whose immediate and future independence, safety, and quality of life depend on it.

  • Our 4th Annual Family & Friends Campaign
  • Dear TACA Family:
Since I started TACA, so many people have asked me, "How can I help?" I have always responded by telling them to take care of their family and beloved children.

In the last few years, we have asked you to go a little further - to reach out to your extended community of family and friends to raise awareness about autism and to help TACA raise funds to continue its mission of improving the quality of life for people with autism.
